Outdoor lovers and nature enthusiasts from near and far flock to Breaks Park for a variety of adventures, such as kayaking and pedal boating, horseback riding, rock climbing, golfing and fantastic birding opportunities.

Explore These Trails

The gorgeous mountainous setting of Breaks Interstate Park is the gateway to more than 25 miles of scenic connected hiking trails of varying difficulties. Pick up trail maps from the Park Visitor Center to help plan your routes. Guided hikes are also available throughout the summer months. If you’re a mountain biker, explore 12 miles of moderate to difficult terrain along the highly revered stacked loop trail system (praised by multiple bike enthusiast websites). Mountain bikes and e-bikes are available to rent in season.

Hit The Water

Planning your next fishing trip? Fish for bass or bluegill from the 12-acre Laurel Lake and two-acre Beaver Pond. Or, cast out into the amply stocked Russell Fork River for rainbow trout. Fishing licenses are required, so be sure to stop by the Park Visitor Center to purchase one.

Russell Fork River is great for whitewater rafting. Gear up in the fall for your next rafting trip and take on major Class III & IV rapids head-on. More experienced, adventurous rafters and kayakers can experience Class V+ rapids through the Breaks Gorge. Enjoy a more leisurely kayak, canoeing or pedal boat experience on Laurel Lake. Don’t own a boat? No worries; boat rentals are available onsite.

Bring the kiddos and make a splash at the beachside waterpark. Open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, Splash in the Park! features a 4,000-square-foot beach-entry leisure pool, a spray ground, four water slides, in-pool basketball and volleyball and other exciting water features.

Choose Your Own Adventure

Be sure to pack your binoculars, as Breaks Interstate Park is an excellent destination for bird watching. Stroll down the teeming Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail and spot native hooded warblers, black and white warblers, turkey vultures, osprey and red tail hawks.

How about a round of golf? Tee off at the exclusive Willowbrook Country Club golf course (available for all overnight park guests) and play the beautifully maintained 18-hole course surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains.

Avid rock climbers will find a number of different locations and climbing routes available throughout the park.
